One of the main criticisms regarding Trivandrum port is the perception of a monopoly. Although a Maersk vessel (San Fernando) was the first to arrive on 11 July 2024, subsequent arrivals have exclusively been MSC-owned or chartered vessels. Ships from companies subcontracted by MSC, such as Safeen, GFS, and Sol, operate almost permanently. In short, TRV currently functions largely as an MSC port.
However, this scenario is set to change by the end of 2027, as stipulated in the Government of Kerala-Adani concession agreement. Subject to Clause 5.8.2, the concessionaire must manage and operate the port on a common-user basis, providing non-discriminatory access to all vessels, shipping lines, and users, and refraining from any unfair practices. In accordance with this provision, all shipping companies will commence operations here shortly.
