Guest author Murukesan T R — former Deputy Chief Engineer, KSEB; Advocate and Member, Trivandrum Bar Association — presents a multi-layered economic blueprint for the port.
Kerala faces a critical need to diversify its revenue streams and systematically reduce its public debt burden. The Trivandrum International Seaport at Vizhinjam, the author argues, is a generational geostrategic asset capable of shifting Kerala from a consumer economy to a global maritime logistics powerhouse.
The blueprint proposes scaling container berths from two to ten, dedicated cruise and bunkering berths on the breakwater, a Free Trade Warehousing Zone adjacent to the port, a fully integrated Multimodal Logistics Park, and a dedicated high-speed freight corridor connecting Vizhinjam to the national freight grid — with all shore-side operations running on green energy.
The complete proposal — including the rail link from Balaramapuram, NH 66 monetisation, and the PPP funding framework — appears in full in this week’s subscriber edition.
